Struggle Against Vouchers Continues |
|
In Milwaukee, the home of the largest publicly funded school voucher program, there are on-going concerns about the negative financial impact that the program has on public schools and the lack of accountability for the publicly-financed voucher schools. In the 2006-2007 school year there were 17,410 students participating the program. Voucher schools receive $6,501 per full-time student and are not required to administer any form of standardized assessments or hire certified teachers.Over a half billion dollars of tax-payers’ money have gone to private vouchers schools in Milwaukee since the program started. Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction estimates that the program will cost $110,517,000 for the 2006-2007 school year.
