Letters to the Editors

Winter 2008/2009

Praise for Christensen

I am currently leaving Columbia, S.C., where I've been for the past three days working with University of South Carolina faculty on issues of diversity in their teacher education program, as well as giving a couple of talks. On the flight here, I brought the fall issue of Rethinking Schools and read it from cover to cover (those are the times I get to read my favorite things).

Linda Christensen's article "Putting Out the Linguistic Welcome Mat" is incredibly powerful. In fact, I was so moved by it that it became the motivation for my decision (at some future date, after I finish current projects) to put together a reader on language and power and teaching. I'm already thinking about other articles/book chapters I'd like to include.

Thank you once again for including Christensen's beautiful and courageous article. I kept bringing out the issue throughout my meetings at USC and speaking about this article. Every prospective and practicing teacher should read it.
