Fasting for Funding

Summer 2004

Oakland, May 10, 2004

Students, parents, teachers and community activists begin a fast for education in front of Oakland City Hall, demanding an end to cuts in education funding. The fast follows a march to Sacramento by students and teachers in the Richmond and West Contra Costa schools. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger refused to meet with the marchers. Schwarzenegger has promised Republicans that he will not increase taxes and proposes using half of the money reserved for schools under Proposition 98 to help pay off the state's budget deficit.
