Public school supporters and students blocked the entrance to a Philadelphia school district building April 17. The day before, 42 Philadelphia public schools were turned over to private for-profit companies, nonprofit agencies, and universities. Edison Schools Inc., the country's largest for-profit education management company, was given contracts to run 20 schools. (For the Austin, TX evaluation of Edison, see page 21.) Summer 2002 |
